his tutorial explains the key points regarding importing files into DesignSpark Mechanical.

The primary import format for DesignSpark Mechanical is the rsdoc format. The Traceparts online library of 3D models can be accessed in this format directly from the user interface via the Online library button on the Ribbon bar. The vast selection of parts available will make populating a design quick and easy.

By selecting (as shown below) the DesignSpark Mechanical option in the drop menu to the right of the Traceparts web page, it is possible to use CAD insertion to download, save and insert the model into a design in one sequential operation. Alternatively, you can use the other options to either download (and save) the file, or add it to the download centre (like a shopping cart or basket), within which are options to send files by email or to trigger downloads individually or as multiple files.

Files which have been downloaded and saved locally can be accessed for future use through the Insert file tool on the Ribbon bar. This provides a faster method of accessing those models or other files which are used repeatedly within designs.

An additional format which will import functional models into DesignSpark Mechanical is Sketchup (skp). 3D models in this format are widely available from a number of sources on the Internet and, once imported, can be modified and manipulated using the DesignSpark Mechanical tools. Due to the nature of the Sketchup models, some surfaces may appear faceted in partial wireframe. If this is an issue, there is an Options button in the File open menu which will give access to……

….a Simplify to surfaces option. This may resolve the problem, depending on the nature of the model in question. With some models, however, selecting this option can cause the conversion to become excessively complex and may result in delays during post-processing.

Another useful format which will import into DesignSpark Mechanical is STEP. These are once again readily available from a number of sources on the Internet. In this case the files will be “read only” and will be able to be manipulated but not modified in DesignSpark Mechanical. In other words, STEP files can be imported, saved and arranged within a design but the form of the imported model cannot be modified in any way. STEP models can, however, be used to Cut shapes into other models using the Combine function as featured in the First steps basic skills tutorials.
